Joseph E. Aoun, a leader in higher education policy and a renowned scholar in linguistics, is the seventh President of Northeastern University.
President Aoun has strategically aligned the University’s research enterprise with three global imperatives—health, security, and sustainability. Northeastern’s faculty focus on interdisciplinary research, entrepreneurship, and transforming academic research into commercial solutions for the world’s most pressing problems. During President Aoun’s tenure, the University has realized a 189 percent growth in external research funding, along with approximately 1,500 patent applications filed by faculty and students.

Dr. Foley is also the executive director of Project Drawdown—the world’s leading resource for climate solutions. Yes, the news on climate change is grim. But what if there was a practical plan, based on the latest science, that could turn it around and help us build a climate-safe future? That’s what Project Drawdown is all about. Drawdown is a multi-faceted set of solutions—focused on fixing the world’s energy, food, and material systems—that can help us stop climate change and pivot to a better, more sustainable world.
The Aquarium Lecture Series is presented free to the public through the generosity of the Lowell Institute.
Jonathan Foley’s work focuses on finding solutions to sustain the climate, ecosystems, and natural resources we all depend on. He has published over 140 scientific articles, including many highly cited works in Nature  and Science, and has written many popular pieces for National Geographic, The New York Times, The Guardian, and Scientific American. A noted science communicator, he has presented at hundreds of venues, including the Aspen Institute, the World Bank, the National Geographic Society, the Chautauqua Institution, the Commonwealth Club, the National March for Science, and TED.
Dr. Foley has won numerous awards and honors, including the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, awarded by President Clinton; the J.S. McDonnell Foundation’s 21st Century Science Award; the Sustainability Science Award from the Ecological Society of America; and the prestigious Heinz Award for the Environment. Prior to joining Project Drawdown, he served as the Executive Director of the California Academy of Sciences and led several environmental science and sustainability organizations with associated faculty appointments at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Minnesota.
